Come and build your very own RARE TONEWOOD GUITAR!
We hear the words 'unique opportunity' all too often - usually as the precursor to quite an underwhelming encounter or experience. Here is the genuine article:
2 weeks in a superb Tuscan villa, fashioning below in the Medieval workshop your own individual, one-off, made from scratch acoustic or classical guitar. MADE FROM:rare Australian tonewoods, salvaged from all over Australia; almost never used or seen in the northern hemisphere, but magnificent to both witness and listen to.
There are guitar making courses (though few), and fewer still to rival the level of quality of those offered by master luthier Chris Wynne of Thomas Lloyd Guitars. To our knowledge, there are very, very few on offer in these parts - and none with these magical woods. Where most guitars are made using traditional rosewoods, spruce, ebony and the like, Chris has been using traditional woods from homeland Australia and Tasmania for twenty years. The results are amazing. Blackheart Sassafras? Fiddleback Blackwood? King William (Billy) Pine? How about making the fretboard from Gidjee - about a third stronger than ebony? Or using a 4000 year-old piece of Huon Pine to create your own musical instrument?
Patiently (extremely!) Chris takes you through the entire process, with four other students, and even if you barely know which end of a saw is the sharp bit, you will come away with this incomparable object. Every time you pass a music shop and look at the rows of factory-made (and sounding) guitars hanging there like battery instruments, you'll know you've poured yourself into a one-off creation. Enjoy it, play it, hand it down - or give it to someone as a priceless gift. Don't believe the hype - check out our 'Video' section, see and listen for yourself.
